A series of events were organised for the occasion throughout the whole of Europe in order to encourage multilingualism, learning and intercultural exchanges.
The European council includes 47 state members, 800 million Europeans and over 200 European languages. In order to promote linguistic heritage, the Strasbourg institution created (in 2011, the European year of languages), the European day of languages. On the 26th September, the even celebrated its 10th anniversary.
Throughout Europe a multitude of organisations, schools and associations participated by organising conferences, themed evenings, activities for children, and language courses.
It’s never too late to learn
The European day of languages was open to everyone, young, older, alone or accompanied with friends, proving that it is never too early or late to learn. With globalisation and the huge increase in international trade, speak ing multiple languages is becoming increasingly necessary, both for personal use (holidays etc) and for business exchanges.
As part of the 10th and 10th JEL Week of Foreign Cultures, held in Paris from 23 September to 2 October, the Forum of Foreign Cultural Institutes has set up free initiation for more than 40 languages which is opportunity to discover new horizons and encourages learning a new language.

The European day of Languages is highly successful each year in 2008, 618 events were organised across 44 European countries, 50 being in France alone.
