Economic and financial translation covers a rather wide field that ranges from stock market analysis to business communication, fixed income research, economic surveys and accounting.

Isabelle Perrin, in her educational book "L'anglais : comment traduire ?" gives an example that demonstrates the relevance of the assertion that "above all, translation is about understanding": In the sentence "Les taux pour les hypothèques ouvertes d'un an s'établissent entre 8,8% et 9,24%", it would be a mistake to assume that "ouvertes" is an adjective that qualifies "les taux". In that case, it would read "ouverts" as "taux" is a masculine plural noun. Therefore, "ouvertes" in the feminine plural can only refer to "hypothèques" which is a feminine plural noun. (...) So the "hypothèques" are indeed "open" (so it should read): "The rates for one-year open mortgages range from 8.8% to 9.24%".

This basic example demonstrates that a translator cannot just settle for an approximate understanding of the source text in order to translate it.

As with any specialization, thorough knowledge of the activity is required, as well as a good understanding of economic and stock market mechanisms.
